The mission of the Jubilee Schools is to create a nurturing environment where children of all denominations can learn and grow in a safe place with food and clean uniforms. The eight Jubilee Schools–all in underserved areas of the Memphis community–reopened beginning in 1999 to commemorate the “Jubilee Year” in 2000. Starting with only 26 students in 1999, there are more than 1400 enrolled in the Jubilee Schools today. More than 87 percent of Jubilee students and their families are at or below the federal poverty level and 95 percent receive tuition assistance.

Design Cares presents Kaleidoscope of Dreams to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

From the press release,

Design Cares presents Kaleidoscope of Dreams to benefit
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

WHO: Event Co-chairs Reynaldo Davis Carter and Dawn Gallagher with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have come together to bring us the third annual DESIGN CARES for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Supporting that team is the entire fashion industry, having generously donated beautiful designer gowns and auction items for Design Cares 2009. About St. Jude: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. For more information, please visit www.stjude.org.

WHAT: Design Cares is a fashion event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. DESIGN CARES 2009 will feature a runway show of exclusive evening gowns by the world’s leading designers including, but not limited to: Adrienne Landau, Carlos Alberto, Carolina Herrera, Catherine Malandrino, Chado Ralph Rucci, Diane Von Furstenberg, John Galliano, Maggie Norris Couture, Marc Jacobs Collection, Matthew Williamson, Neil Bieff, Nicole Miller, Vera Wang, and Yigal Azrouel. Every dress will be auctioned off at the event and online to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research and treatment centers.

New for 2009 are several elements to Design Cares. First, is Models of Hope, whereby socials and celebrities will model the gowns in a runway-walk-a-thon for St. Jude Design Cares. Much like any walk-a-thon, Models of Hope are equipped with donation forms to accept pledges for their runway-walk. Second, is the theme Kaleidoscope of Dreams: “Kaleidoscope” because the show is made possible by the charitable efforts of so many participating parties and designers coming together; and “Dreams” because 2009 will truly be a Dream Come True for two young girls, and current St. Jude cancer patients who wish to be fashion designers when they grow up. Design Cares has paired these girls with designers Christian V. Siriano (winner, Project Runway Season 4) and Tian Justman (emerging designer and former St. Jude patient and cancer survivor, www.tianjustman.com), who will reinterpret the children’s gown drawings for the runway.

WHERE: Armory, 26 Street and Lexington Avenue; Manhattan, New York
