1st Annual Memphis Snuggie™ Pub Crawl to Raise Funds for Amelia’s Voice

Join us for the 1st Annual Memphis Snuggie™ Pub Crawl will be held on Saturday, November 28, at 8 pm in downtown Memphis to benefit Amelia’s Voice, a private medical benefit fund for Amelia Thompson, who suffers from Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP).

Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP) is a disease in which tumors grow inside the larynx, vocal cords and trachea. It affects both children and adults. There is no known cure for RRP. If left untreated, these respiratory tumors will continue to grow, blocking the patient’s airway with suffocation being the likely result. Frequent surgeries are imperative to keep the patient’s airway from being compromised and to prevent the tumors from fatally spreading to the lungs.

Amelia's Voice is a private benefit fund to assist in the treatment of 2 year old Amelia Thompson. Amelia was diagnosed with the disease in June 2009 and has already had four surgeries to date with many more still ahead of her. She receives treatment for RRP at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Her next surgery is scheduled for December 21. All proceeds raised for Amelia’s Voice go directly toward travel expenses, lodging, transportation and the medical expenses.

All you need to join in the fun is a Snuggie – the Blanket with Sleeves! The Snuggie keeps you warm and gives you the freedom to use your hands to drink beer, shake hands or high five. Go crazy decorating your Snuggie and you could win the "SNAZZYSnuggie™" Contest. Prizes will be awarded in several categories for the Best of Show Snuggie.

Participants must be 21 years of age and wearing a Snuggie™ to join! Stay warm and look cool while bar hopping through downtown Memphis. Entry Fee is $10 with a portion of proceeds going to Amelia's Voice, a private benefit founded by Stephen and Kim Thompson. Learn more at www.rrpf.org, www.causes.com/ameliasvoice, or http://www.ameliasvoice.org. Other ways to help Amelia’s Voice may be found on the latter website, including purchasing Letter’s from Santa, transferring air travel miles, or simply making a donation.

Snuggies are available at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, CVS and other local retailers. Tickets can be purchased from any hosts. Look for us at various local events during the month of November, where tickets will be on hand.

The 10th Annual Jazz & Pasta Party, benefiting Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South

The 10th Annual Jazz & Pasta Party, benefiting the nonprofit, interfaith Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South, will be Sunday evening, October 18, 5 – 8:30, atMemphis Botanic Garden.
This event supports the work of the Centers in providing affordable mental health care for all citizens of the greaterMemphis area, regardless of financial limitations.

Often a community's most vulnerable citizens have the greatest problems and least access to needed help. For 28 years, however, thousands in Greater Memphis have been able to find assistance in addressing their personal and family mental health problems at the Samaritan Counseling Centers.

The Centers were organized in 1981 to provide quality, compassionate and affordable mental health care, counseling and educational services to all needing them in Greater Memphis. Sliding scale fees may be arranged for low-income clients and for those whose insurance does not cover full-fee service. In all instances, the Samaritan Centers’ counselors respect clients’ values and work to help them achieve wholeness of body, mind and spirit.
The Centers subsidize the $50 per hour difference between the cost for their services and what low-fee clients can pay through a combination of support from area congregations, foundations and businesses, individual contributions and their own fund-raising efforts.

The annual Jazz & Pasta Party is the Centers major fundraising event and offers supporters a win-win situation. They get to enjoy a wonderful, fun evening with friends, with the proceeds going to benefit a good cause.
Rene Koopman with Tom Lonardo, Jim Mahannah and Bob Sunda will “jazz it up” with hot licks and cool riffs, while guests enjoy a variety of delicious pastas from some of Memphis’ best dining venues - plus all the accompanying edibles and beverages.

Cris Hardaway will be the evening’s host and auctioneer. After the toe-tapping jazz and taste-tempting pastas, there will be Live and Silent auctions – both presenting appealing and intriguing items, including art, antiques and artifacts, jewelry, vacation trips, culinary selections, entertainment options, clothing and grooming choices and one-of-a-kind specialty items.
For reservations or information, contact the Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South at 901/729-3900 orsamaritanmemphis@bellsouth.net. Individual tickets are $65, table hosts $650, and sponsors $1,000.

2009 Halloween Party Fundraiser
Presented by Friends For Life
October 31, 2009

Dear Prospective 100 Club Member:

Under The Big Top...
is the theme of the 2009 Halloween Costume Party benefiting for Friends For Life Corporation (FFL), the Mid-South's oldest and most comprehensive AIDS service organization. This October 31st extravaganza will feature elaborate costumes, costume contests, entertainment and much, much more to support the life-changing programs of Friends For Life.

This year the Halloween Sponsorship Committee finds itself in an unusual economic situation. In previous years many local businesses have provided services and products free-of-charge; however, due to the current economic climate many local businesses have been unable to provide their typical level of support.

You may ask how can I help....
As part of the Memphis community and a supporter of Friends For Life will you consider becoming part of our 100 Club by making a $100 donation to help offset expenses of conducting the Halloween Party.

As you may know...
Friends For Life serves a growing number of people who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Mid-South area including eight counties in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi; more than 45% of those clients are women. One of Friends For Life's vital services is the Nancy Fletcher Food Pantry that distributes 16 tons of food monthly which provides nutritious food to 1,600 people each month, of which 200+ are children. Other services include the Aloysius Home Housing Program, HIV Testing, case management, support groups and the award winning Positive Living Center and Wellness University.

Friends For Life is in its 24th year of serving Memphis as the mid-South's largest and oldest AIDS service organization. Our Halloween fundraiser this year is a Costume party at the Bridges, 477 N. 5th St. (behind St. Jude at 5th & Auction.

Your financial support will be utilized to defray expenses and maximize the funds raised to support FFL programs. Just send you check, made our to FFL to 43 N. Cleveland St., Memphis, TN 38104 with "Halloween" in the memo section or contact Gina Fortner to charge it to your credit card.

Please consider being a part of the effort to continue FFL's mission. If you require additional information please contact Gina Fortner at (901) 272-0855 or by email at Gina.Fortner@friendsforlifecorp.org.

Cooper Young Festival Kick-off

Festival Kickoff party will be at Dish,
948 South Cooper Street
September 17 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Festival Kick-off & Poster Party: September 17, 2009 – 6-9 pm

The start of the Cooper Young Festival season will begin on Thursday, September 17, with the annual Kick-off & Poster Party. Mary and Jonathan Postal have been selected as the 2009 Poster Artists and will be our guests of honor on this night. Each year, one artist from the neighborhood is chosen to design a poster that embraces the history, art and eclectic style of Cooper Young. This year, we are happy to have this talented duo and their wonderful expression of what Cooper Young means to them.

The 2009 original poster art along with a limited amount of signed posters will be sold during a silent auction at the Kickoff Party. Mary and Jonathan Postal have worked, lived in or close to Cooper Young for over a decade; they used certain icons and touchstones from the neighborhood in their piece of work. Some of which are the Elvis altar that once lived in the earlier incarnation of Java Cabana that now is displayed at Goner Records, a cat at the House of Mews, the parade of dogs you can observe at your leisure while sitting on the sidewalk with a cup of coffee or glass of wine at numerous independently owned restaurants, bars and coffee shops, and chairs from Burke’s Book Store. A guitarist and a metal artist highlight the on-going creative work that comes from the residents of Cooper Young.

Everyone is invited to the Kick-off Party which will be held at Dish Restaurant located at 948 South Cooper Street from 6 – 9 pm. Refreshments will be provided by Festival Sponsor Chick-fil-a on Union Avenue which will be hosting their Grand Opening in Midtown on this day. A.S. Barboro and the Cooper Young Business Association are providing music and the beverages for this event. Everyone is invited to come celebrate the twenty-second year of the Cooper Young Festival.

Paula Casey discusses the book The Perfect 36: Tennessee Delivers Woman Suffrage

The late, great Carol Lynn Yellin and Dr. Jan Sherman, currently chair of the History Dept. at the University of Memphis, brin g to life the struggle of suffragists to earn women the right to vote which culminated with the final vote needed for ratification in the Tennessee legislature. The Perfect 36 gives voice to those who were for and against the right of women to vote with a richly illustrated volume.

The authors provide a great deal of writings of those who were involved in this important movement along with pictures and cartoons to give a vivid sense of what it was like to win enfranchisement. Carol Lynn Yellin had interviews with Rep. Harry Burn and Rep. Joseph Hanover before they died that no other author has. There are also photographs and bios of ordinary people in Tennessee who exemplified the grassroots efforts of the suffrage movement.

The Perfect 36 is an important resource for anyone interested in how women and men earned the right for women to fully participate in the democratic process of the United States. Nearly 1600 copies of the book were donated to every school, library, and college in the state of Tennessee so this history would be preserved. It is in the state and Shelby County archives.

About Paula Casey:

A dynamic speaker on voting rights, particularly the 72-year struggle for women to be included in the U.S. Constitution, Paula F. Casey has also produced a videotape/DVD on woman suffrage and helped publish the book, The Perfect 36: Tennessee Delivers Woman Suffrage. She has spoken extensively around the country at junior colleges and universities. She served 3 terms as president of the Downtown Neighborhood Association.

WEVL'S 21ST ANNUAL BLUES ON THE BLUFF® JULY 25

Memphis, Tenn. – It’s summertime, and that means it’s time for Blues on the Bluff®, WEVL FM 89.9’s annual party on the river, with cold drinks, hot BBQ, and even hotter music.

Since 1989, WEVL has rented the National Ornamental Metal Museum grounds every summer to host one of its most popular fundraisers. High on the South Bluffs with the Mississippi River as a backdrop, past concerts have showcased some of the mid-south's finest blues, soul, and rhythm and blues artists.

Blues on the Bluff® is a full-grown 21 years old this year. The Bo-Keys, Kenny Brown, and Blind Mississippi Morris & The Pocket Rockets are on board to perform. Once again guests will be able to enjoy the gorgeous view of the Mississippi—“the finest from Cairo to New Orleans,” according to Mark Twain—from the tree-studded grounds of the National Ornamental Metal Museum.

Kenny Brown is up first at 6:30 p.m., this time as a solo artist. Kenny learned his blues licks from Junior Kimbrough, Othar Turner, and R.L. Burnside. Kenny and his slide guitar music were featured in the Craig Brewer film Black Snake Moan. He has produced the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic since 2006.

Next are The Bo-Keys, fresh from their performance at New York’s Lincoln Center. The Bo-Keys are a homegrown group founded by bass player and WEVL member Scott Bomar, film score composer for Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan. The band always features some of the region’s premiere players—whether it’s original Stax Records soul men Skip Pitts and Ben Cauley, or John Gary Williams from The Mad Lads.

Last up are Blind Mississippi Morris & The Pocket Rockets, led by acclaimed bluesman Morris Cummings. A Mississippi Delta native and cousin of blues legend Willie Dixon, Blind Mississippi Morris was ranked as one of the ten best harmonica players in the world by Bluzharp magazine. Blind since age four and playing the blues “ever since I can remember,” he made his first appearance on WEVL over 30 years ago.

Artists will perform in the Riverbluff Pavilion, a unique gazebo constructed from architectural castings salvaged from a 19th century Beale Street building. The grounds are handicapped accessible.

There certainly can’t be a Memphis summertime party without food, and WEVL is excited to welcome back Central BBQ. They’ll be serving pork shoulder sandwiches, smoked turkey legs, barbecued portobello mushroom sandwiches, and other Memphis-based dishes. Central BBQ is generously donating all food sale profits to WEVL, so leave the cooking to them and come hungry! Beer, wine, coolers, and non-alcoholic drinks will also be sold, with all proceeds going to WEVL.

Collectible posters from past events and other WEVL items can be purchased as well.

Guests are asked to bring blankets and chairs, but please leave ice chests and pets at home. Admission is $15 at the gate ($8 for kids 11 and under) and free guarded parking is provided across from the event in Chickasaw Heritage Park.

Photographs, video clips, and posters from past Blues on the Bluff® concerts can be seen on the station’s website at www.wevl.org.

Blues on the Bluff® is dedicated to the memory of Dee “Cap’n Pete” Henderson. Proceeds go to Memphis’ only independent, listener-supported volunteer radio station.

To get there from Memphis, take I-55 North or Crump Blvd. to the Metal Museum Drive exit #12C (the last exit just before the “old” bridge), then follow the signs to Blues on the Bluff®.

THRILLER!

From the press release;

The renowned architect’s party, at Memphis’ Askew, Nixon Ferguson Architects, will be benefiting the International Children’s Heart Foundation this year. The theme of the Friday, October 30th Halloween event has been in the works for a while. The theme is Michael Jackson’s THRILLER!!

During the event, the video will be played with a core group of dancers performing the famous Thriller Dance! Any guest who knows the moves is welcome to join in! The goal is to have the entire parking lot at 1500 Union Ave. moving together under spotlights, keeping the “thrill” alive. Plan to be there!!

It seems appropriate that this be pre-released on this day of Michael Jackson’s passing. More details will be released nearer to the event. Questions? Please call ICHF at 901-869-4243.

If you do not know the dance and wish to learn it, you can go to the internet and key in “Thriller tutorial” and several sites are available.
